Limit Break

obsidian skin

One foot in front of the other,
Beating pavement,
They’re coming
There’s the whispers and the cackle
Undecipherable phrases
Closing in, coming…. Escape
Your deaf to everything except
The grating rasp of your lungs heavy labor
Blood rushing to your ears
Thump and sputter trying to burst through it’s cage
Almost drowning out the bedlam,
Your crucifixion is inevitable,
It’s upon you and you …. Stop
Drop to your knees and wait
The anticipation is nothing
Eager hands tear deep lacerations
You feel tearing far deeper than the flesh
There’s not fleeing, no furious flight from endless frustration,
You kneel as the life spills from you
Floating somewhere above it waiting to become something more than a specter
Spectator, apart, objective, cold.
Then it’s over and you’re left to wonder what could be left
Look down and there
Where should lie shards of ruin marred by gore
There is iridescent shimmer
Obsidian skin, hard, immiscible
It’s what’s left after the loss of the last shred
The modicum of your compassion stripped
No flesh left to scar just armor
And in your hand sword and dagger
Force stealer, ripper of souls, the weapon of the ruthless
Cause that is what you’ve become,
You crouch waiting
The lamentation starting
They’re coming to strip your bones
And you’re waiting…again
