She watches him sleep,
his chest,
rises and falls,
rises and falls,
rises and falls,
so peaceful.
Could have been an apparition,
those raised hands and voices,
the impact of palm and face,
palm and face,
palm and face,
’til her lip split.
Wouldn’t it be easy,
warm blood soaking her cotton sheets,
red on floral,
smeared because he would come awake.
Red hand clutching for her,
Would he take her with?
To his hell?
he would try,
and try,
and again try,
Would he win?
would it matter?
She was dead,
empty,
hollow.
Watching him now,
while he sleeps.

She could tie his hands to the bed and smother him. Then she wouldn’t have to worry about blood stains on the sheets.
I love the deceptive tone of the first six lines; the way I had to read the nest six lines twice, because I didn’t quite believe it, reminding me how often friends and relatives don’t know it’s happening. The red hand clutching at her – I’ve imagined that hand myself, except it wasn’t a hand – he was him running after me, having climbed out of the mineshaft. It was a long time ago. I wonder how you know about these things.
This is a very moving poem.

Sadly Jane I know because it’s a reality for so many folks close to me, I know the anger. And while I can’t claim to know the kind of physical abuse that leads a person here, I’ve had my share of other kinds of scars. Maybe one day I’ll get to share my whole story over a glass of English Harbor rum.

Whoa, that makes a person feel really empty inside… Very deep, Michelle.

Great capture of a moment in time, a stillness in the middle of storm, a turning point. Very good capture.
